Groove: The No Treble Podcast, Ep. 118: Alan Robert

Alan Robert has spent over three decades as the bassist and primary songwriter for the iconic hard rock band Life of Agony, but his creativity stretches far beyond music. Known for their powerful sound and emotional depth, Life of Agony’s debut album, River Runs Red, earned a place in Rolling Stone’s list of “One of the Greatest Metal Albums of All Time” (and I still consider it one of the best debuts). The band, which recently released the single “The Crow (In Memory of B.L.),” a tribute to The Crow’s Brandon Lee, continues to evolve and push the boundaries of rock music.

In this conversation, Alan shares some fascinating stories from his life, both on stage and off. As the band navigated the highs and lows of touring the world and building a dedicated fanbase, Alan developed a deep passion for the bass. His playing, influenced by bands like Metallica and Pink Floyd, has always been about more than just technique. Alan describes his approach to bass as serving the song, making sure it resonates emotionally with the listener.

Reflecting on the early days of Life of Agony, Alan talked about the excitement — and challenges — of being a young band on the road. The rough living conditions, the thrill of performing live, and the bond shared among bandmates all contributed to their unique chemistry. This chemistry helped the band create music that continues to connect deeply with fans, even decades later.

River Runs Red remains a fan favorite, and the band’s 2019 release The Sound of Scars (their sixth release!) received critical praise, reminding everyone that Life of Agony still has plenty to say.

But Alan’s creativity doesn’t stop with music. Outside of the band, he’s built a thriving career as a comic book artist and writer (and the man behind he Bettlejuice and Universal Monsters coloring books!). Alan’s work in comics has gained widespread acclaim. He reflected on the challenges of breaking into the comics industry as a musician, but his love for horror — fueled by classic films and a passion for storytelling — drove him to push forward. Balancing both careers hasn’t been easy, but Alan seems to thrive in that juggling act. He credits his ability to switch between music and art with keeping him creatively energized. He also hinted at some exciting new projects in the works, including potential adaptations of his comics into films and television shows.

For fans of both Life of Agony and Alan’s comic work, it’s clear that his drive to create is unstoppable. Whether on stage or at the drawing board, Alan Robert continues to inspire with his relentless passion for both music and art.

Life of Agony Pays Homage to The Crow’s Brandon Lee with New Song and Video

Life of Agony has a long history of paying homage to the films that helped shape their teenage years. Back in 1995, the band covered Simple Minds’ Don’t You (Forget About Me) on the group’s Ugly album; the song was made famous by the movie The Breakfast Club. In 1997, on their album Soul Searching Sun, a music video for the song Desire incorporated visuals reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. That tradition continues with a brand-new original track titled The Crow (In Memory of B.L.), which pays tribute to the fallen star Brandon Lee, who tragically lost his life during the filming of the cult-classic, released 30 years ago.

Life of Agony’s The Crow (In Memory of B.L.) was recorded in New York City at the legendary Sear Sound studio, best known for hit albums by David Bowie and John Lennon, as well as at The Nest Studio, in Long Island, NY. The song was recorded, produced, and mixed by LOA’s guitarist Joey Zampella (who also co-produced the group’s last album The Sound of Scars). The song was mastered by Grammy-award winner Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers).

With 2024 marking the 30th anniversary of Brandon Lee’s Crow film, and all of the controversy surrounding the new Bill Skarsgård remake, Life of Agony felt inspired to go back and give respect to the ‘94 film that made such a huge impact on them during their early years.

“There’s something very special about the original Crow that made it timeless, and there’s a reason that it resonated with us as kids,” explained LOA bassist Alan Robert. “It was an absolute tragedy… Brandon Lee was killed the year we did our first album River Runs Red, and by the time The Crow came out in ‘94, he was already a legend. Brandon completely embodied the role, made it iconic, and lost his life in the process. It was just so incredibly sad and affected us deeply. He was such a charismatic character and in the very beginning stages of his career. Director Alex Proyas captured lightning in a bottle.”

A music video for Life of Agony’s The Crow (In Memory of B.L.) was filmed and edited in New York by Derek Soto of Sinestra Studios with motion graphics created by The Dor Brothers. The clip was produced by Chris White (Doors, Portals, V/H/S Viral) and Life of Agony.

"We thought that creating a song and a sound that would seamlessly fit on the original film's soundtrack would be a perfect way to honor Brandon and his legacy," said LOA guitarist Joey Zampella.

Next year marks three decades since LIFE OF AGONY’s critically acclaimed, debut album River Runs Red was released on Roadrunner Records, and the group is celebrating the milestone with a 2023 world tour. The first leg of Life of Agony’s “30 Years of River Runs Red” tour kicks off in Europe with dates starting on Friday the 13th of January in Bochum, Germany and ending in Milton Keynes, England on February 11th. Tickets: http://www.lifeofagony.com. More territories will be announced shortly.

Rolling Stone hailed Life of Agony’s “River Runs Red” as being “one of the greatest metal albums of all time.

“River Runs Red was an album that helped so many people get through some really dark times,” explains Life of Agony bassist Alan Robert. “It was raw, heavy, and extremely emotional when it dropped back in ’93. We had no idea the impact it would have on that generation, let alone being able to see it have such longevity three decades later. It is a complete honor and full circle experience for us to celebrate this moment with our longtime friends Prong and Madball, who were both there in the very beginning of the band’s history.”

Earlier in 2022, Life of Agony’s full-length documentary “The Sound of Scars”, directed by Leigh Brooks, was praised by fans as well as the media for taking a deep and personal look into the band member’s lives. Stories of domestic violence, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation came out through introspective interviews with the musicians themselves and their respective families.  Kerrang raved about its “unflinching” take on family with a 5-star review and the BBC’s Jennie Kermode called it “a highly accomplished piece of work… a story full of pain and struggle.” The film is available for purchase or rent on multiple streaming platforms and is out now as a collector’s edition BluRay through Raven Banner Entertainment. Alan Robert Featured in New Spoiler NYC Video "Banned in 38 States"

Alan Robert has been up to no good. Since he returned from touring the world with his band Life of Agony, he's been seen in New York City driving around in an old checkered cab dressed as Taxi Driver's Travis Bickle. Most recently, he was caught on video being arrested at the Lucky 13 Saloon in Brooklyn, NY.

It's all in good fun though. Robert has resurrected his punk rock trio Spoiler NYC to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the group's debut album with a pair of music videos and a brand-new, remastered release titled Banned in 38 States.

"I grew up on punk rock when it was dangerous. When burned out buildings lined Hell's Kitchen instead of these shiny, billion-dollar, high-rise condos. We're bringing back that raw, old-school angst with Spoiler NYC,” said Robert. “I remember the feeling that chaos could break out at any given moment…"

Grammy-Award winner Ken Lewis, of Wu Tang Clan, Beastie Boys, and Eminem fame, produced and mixed Spoiler NYC’s “Banned in 38 States” and “Damaged Goods”. Both new songs are included on Spoiler NYC’s new album (also titled “Banned in 38 States”) along with 12 other remastered tracks that first appeared on the group’s 2007 debut “Grease Fire in Hell’s Kitchen”. Remastering was done by Life of Agony's Joey Zampella at The Nest Studio in Long Island, NY.

Renowned artist & musician Alan Robert, best known for being the primary songwriter and bassist for Life of Agony and the creator of the hit book series The Beauty of Horror, is also a man who would not take it anymore. Robert embraces his inner Travis Bickle in the new video for his punk rock side project Spoiler NYC. The band, along with director Derek Soto, hit the mean streets of New York City to recreate shots from Scorsese’s cult-classic Taxi Driver, with Robert in the iconic mohawk and unmistakable checkered cab.

“There’s no sicker feeling in the world than driving down the streets of New York in an old cab dressed like Travis Bickle,” laughs Robert. “Random strangers were running over to snap selfies with me, thinking we were filming a sequel or something!”

“It was truly a sight to behold Alan's transformation into Travis and his uncanny resemblance to DeNiro in the movie,” explained director Derek Soto. “It was an honor to be chosen to help bring Spoiler NYC’s vision and concept to life on camera, paying homage to a film that is one of my all-time favorites. I say with proud confidence that working on this music video has pushed my potential for future projects to come.”
