Alan Robert is not just the bassist and co-founder of the Brooklyn metal legends Life of Agony. Besides writing most of the band's lyrics and being responsible for the artwork of the albums and t-shirts, Alan Robert is a graduate artist, author of a series of horror comics and coloring books, the latest one, "The Beauty of Horror: Ghosts of Christmas" was released a few months ago. A new one is waiting for us - "The Beauty of Horror: Tricks and Treats". He has a number of awards, the first editions of his books are sold out weeks after the release, and currently they are shooting movies, based on a couple of them. In his comic books there are nightmarish thrillers ("Crawl To Me"), others tell of rock'n'roll murderers-superheroes ("Killogy") and there are the charming grotesque coloring books from "The Beauty in Horror" series, filled with zombies, skeletons and monsters. We caught Alan in Munich at the end of their last tour, and he has quite openly told us about the band over the years, the difficulties in the life of the musician, the responsibility for the fans who have found his songs and Life of Agony as an integral part of their lives and the band as his family.

Life of Agony HINTS THAT THEY WILL Continue THE ‘River Runs Red’ Narrative On Their Upcoming New Album

Life Of Agony‘s latest album teaser hints that their new record will focus on continuing the “Rivers Runs Red“ story of a troubled teenager who slit his wrists in the bathroom. The record is set to arrive on Napalm in the fall.

Life of Agony emerged from the New York music scene in the early ’90s with one of the most distinctive sounds in its genre. Best known for its 1993 metal debut “River Runs Red” (Roadrunner Records), named by Rolling Stone as being one of the “100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time” the band instantly built a die-hard, cult following.

Since the 90’s, the group has toured relentlessly with bands, including Metallica, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Foo Fighters, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Life of Agony released two more studio albums for Roadrunner: “Ugly” (’95) and “Soul Searching Sun” (’97), before signing to major label Sony/Epic Records in 2005 to record “Broken Valley” with producer Greg Fidelman (Slipknot, Metallica). Life of Agony has sold over one million albums to date.

When Life of Agony first formed the band perfected their angst filled, heavy, hardcore metal cutting through at times. The album, “River Runs Red” was similar to their stage show at the time, straight up energy and aggression in a hardcore, thrash format, with shards of heavy metal cutting through at times, and the group toured extensively upon its release.

Last year, Life of Agony released its 5th studio album, titled “A Place Where There’s No More Pain”. Rolling Stone hailed it as “One of the Most Anticipated Albums of the Year.” The album was produced by Matt Brown & Life of Agony and mastered by Ted Jensen (Alice in Chains, Machine Head, Deftones).

Bassist Alan Robert shared his enthusiasm on touring last year, “You really can’t beat the crazy energy of a packed, sweaty, tiny club, like we used to play back in the day, so we decided to include some very intimate rooms on this tour, along with the bigger venues, to feel that deep emotional connection again with our die-hard fans.”

“The Beauty of Horror” Claymation Brings Carnage and Bloodshed to the North Pole

Read article on Bloody Disgusting >

Timed to coincide with a special holiday-themed coloring book release from IDW Publishing, titled The Beauty of Horror: Ghosts of Christmas, creator Alan Robert and animator Trent Shy plan to dismantle the North Pole by unleashing Robert’s gruesome characters upon Santa’s Workshop.

“This will be our goriest film yet, and I’m very excited about that. It’s going to be insane,” says Shy.

“I’m doing some things with animation that I’ve never done before and that makes it even more exciting. There will be blood… lot’s of blood.”

Robert adds, “Having grown up as a kid on all the old stop-motion, feel-good holiday specials like Rudolph and Frosty, it’s especially fun for me to be able to sic Ghouliana on those guys with chainsaws and witchcraft. It’s like an ultra-violent R-rated version of A Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Shy is no stranger to horror claymation, with millions of views under his belt for his other films, he says “The biggest challenge with clay animation is the clay itself. I use different types of clay but most of it is “animators” clay, which is very soft, so the characters need constant upkeep while they’re being manipulated. This is why you don’t see clay being used in stop motion anymore. Most stop motion films these days use latex, silicone, and even 3D printing for characters.”

Robert explains, “It’s mind-blowing to see how it’s done behind the scenes. The amount of time it takes to sculpt each character and the attention to detail required to build the sets… it’s just wild. Claymation is truly an art all in itself. I always knew it was painstaking work, but now I have a new found respect for it.”

“The Beauty of Horror: Ghosts of Christmas Coloring Book” by Alan Robert arrives in stores October 2018 from IDW Publishing.

Life of Agony Announces 'Rise of The Underground' Tour 2018

LOA-Rise-of-the-Underground-Tour-2018-Admat-Web-Quality.jpg

New York’s LIFE OF AGONY has announced dates for a headlining trek called “Rise of the Underground Tour 2018” spanning the USA and Europe. The shows will begin with two sold-out, hometown warm-up gigs April 18th & 19th at Saint Vitus in Brooklyn, and conclude November 2nd as headliners of The Sound of Revolution Festival in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Full list of dates are below.

“With 2018 marking the 25th anniversary of our debut album, we are just so incredibly grateful to our fans for sticking with us all these years and wanted to do something really special for them. We’re breaking out some old fan favorites that we’ve never played before live and hitting cities we haven’t been to in over a decade,” says bassist Alan Robert. “You really can’t beat the crazy energy of a packed, sweaty, tiny club, like we used to play back in the day, so we decided to include some very intimate rooms on this tour, along with the bigger venues, to feel that deep emotional connection again with our die-hard fans. It’s gonna be insane.”

Joining Rise of the Underground Tour 2018 as main support during the September US dates will be Silvertomb, the new band featuring Johnny Kelly and Kenny Hickey from Type O Negative. More support acts to be announced soon.

LIFE OF AGONY emerged from the New York music scene in the early '90s with one of the most distinctive sounds in its genre. Best known for its 1993 metal/crossover debut River Runs Red, the band instantly built a cult following. For over two decades, the group toured relentlessly all over the world, sharing stages with the biggest names in rock, including Metallica, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Foo Fighters, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. After the much-praised Ugly (1995), LIFE OF AGONY opted for a highly energetic alternative rock approach on Soul Searching Sun (1997) and Broken Valley (2005) – the latter produced by Greg Fidelman (Slipknot, Metallica). Last year, the group released their 5th studio album A Place Where There’s No More Pain (2017) to critical acclaim, debuting at #24 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Album Chart. LIFE OF AGONY has sold over one million albums to date.
