The Sound of Scars
Directed by Leigh Brooks
The story of three lifelong friends who overcame domestic violence, substance abuse and depression to form Life of Agony, one of the most influential bands in its genre, led by the very first openly transgender singer. Through the success of their groundbreaking 1993 debut "River Runs Red", hailed by Rolling Stone as “One of the Greatest Metal Albums of All Time”, they channeled their cumulative life stories into a soundtrack for a broken generation. This newfound fame allowed them to suppress the tragedies of their pasts, but in the wake of their accomplishments, unforeseen obstacles arose.

REVOLVER EXCLUSIVE: The Beauty of Horror 5 COMING THIS SEPT.!
Best known in heavy-music circles as the bassist of NYHC-turned-alt-metal veterans Life of Agony, Alan Robert has also been making a name for himself as the creator and illustrator of The Beauty of Horror coloring book series. When he hasn't been recommending headbanging Halloween costume ideas for Revolver, he's been working on the latest installment in the franchise, The Beauty of Horror 5: Haunt of Fame, which draws, in part, on his love of rock & roll. "It's like a twisted wax museum filled with all of my favorite pop culture stars," Robert commented. "Similar to how [recurring character] Ghouliana took on horror icons in the last book, this time she tackles rock royalty, sports heroes, and famous faces from TV and film."

HALLOWEEN EPISODE: Alan Robert Joins The Pit's Last Words Podcast
Halloween and metal go hand in hand. Who among us doesn’t fill our Halloween playlists full of dark and ominous heavy metal standards? Slayer’s “Raining Blood,” Type O Negative’s “Black No. 1,” literally any Cannibal Corpse track—let’s face it, it’s not really Halloween if you’re not hearing some big riffs and menacing lyrical depictions of evil deeds. So it only makes sense that a metal musician would be a natural candidate for creating vivid visual illustrations of horror as well.
On this week’s episode of our heavy metal talk show Last Words, hosts Jordan Olds (Two Minutes To Late Night), Katy Irizarry (Season Of Mist), and Doc Coyle (Bad Wolves/Ex Man Podcast) get their hands dirty with Life of Agony bassist Alan Robert, who in recent years has had a successful side hustle as the creator of a spooky anthology of books. In 2016, Robert released The Beauty of Horror, coloring book that combined one of our favorite activities as kids with the brutality and gore of supernatural horror and slasher flicks. He’s since released three more volumes, the most recent, The Beauty of Horror IV, having just been released in September, as well as a companion tarot deck. Though he admits that he tends to view Halloween, itself, as amateur night.
“Every day is Halloween around here. I leave it to the rookies on Halloween,” he says, adding that he actually got into monsters and illustration well before he started playing music. “For me, I started music really late, I only picked up a guitar at 16, 17, but I was drawing since I’m like six. That’s all I ever did was draw my own comic books and sit at the lunch table and draw monsters. That’s all I was about, 24-7. Especially when Star Wars came out, and all these cool creatures to draw. I was infatuated with everything monster related.”
REVOLVER EXCLUSIVE: Alan Robert's TOP 5 Halloween Costume Ideas for Metal Fans
What are you gonna be for Halloween? There are so many possibilities — just pulling from the world of heavy music alone. That being the case, we hit up a man who knows more than a little about the things that go bump in the night, Life of Agony bassist and The Beauty of Horror creator-illustrator Alan Robert, for some suggestions for badass metal-themed costumes. He spotlighted five artists "known for their twisted visuals and their frightfully visceral performances."

New Creepy Crafts from Beauty of Horror Creator Alan Robert Bring Stress Relief During Quarantine
SAN DIEGO, CA (August 11, 2020) – Adjusting to the new normal during the COVID-19 crisis has been extremely stressful for millions of people around the world. As a result, hands-on hobbies like coloring and crafting have surged in popularity. These relaxing alternatives to screen-heavy entertainment provide a creative outlet for those looking to unplug and unwind, as well as for the creators themselves.
Bestselling horror aficionado (and Life of Agony bassist) Alan Robert has been using his downtime during the pandemic to create new Beauty of Horror coloring and activity books that are guaranteed to appeal to fans of horror and the paranormal.
“Before COVID-19 hit, I was booked for the rest of the year touring with my band Life of Agony,” explained Alan Robert. “But once large gathering restrictions went into effect and concerts were postponed until 2021, I found myself with a lot of unexpected time on my hands. I began drawing everyday and it really gave me a sense of purpose and something to focus on. Ironically, drawing all of these horrifying images distracted me from the real horrors going on outside my door.”
“Since the first Beauty of Horror coloring book release in 2016, Alan Robert has tapped into a unique activity space, where a highly engaged fandom eagerly awaits each new entry in the line. We know this range of new products, each a testament to the blood-curling charm of the brand, will send fans to their tables and desks — pencils at the ready! — to dive into more deliciously dark activities,” says IDW's Justin Eisinger.
New releases due this fall include: The Beauty of Horror 4: Creature Feature Coloring Book which pays homage to iconic horror movies with over 80 pages to color, The Beauty of Horror Tarot Card Decks, as featured on SyFy’s Metal Crush Monday (skip to 11:15 for an exclusive look): https://bit.ly/31CRz3x, and The Beauty of Horror: Haunt This Journal, praised as “The must have activity book of the year!” by Bloody Disgusting.
As Variety mentioned recently, The Beauty of Horror universe is set to expand in a big way with an animated series in development from Arrival and Bird Box scribe Eric Heisserer (under his Chronology banner), Rooster Teeth Studios (Transformers: War for Cybertron), and creator Alan Robert.
